Which part of the common bile duct is infrequently identified by ultrasound?
The common bile duct is comprised of 3 parts, the first of which is in the right lesser omentum, the second posterior to the duodenum, and the third posterior to the pancreatic head. As the common bile duct passes posterior to the pancreatic head, it drains into the duodenum through the ampulla of Vater. This region is often obscured by the pancreatic head.
